Hill Dickinson has scored a major coup for its ambitions in the UK corporate market  with the trophy hire of DLA Piper private equity chief Darryl Cooke, one of the most high-profile transactional lawyers in the northwest.

Cooke will join the UK top 40 firm’s Manchester arm as a partner next week and will also head up its local corporate practice.

At DLA Piper, Cooke was joint head of private equity with a brief to oversee the transatlantic law firm's operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He also co-ordinated the firm’s UK regional private equity team during his three-year tenure at the firm.

Cooke was also formerly national head of the respected private equity team he was instrumental in setting up at Addleshaw Goddard, during an earlier spell at the national firm.

He runs a practice that acts for private equity houses and corporate clients on management buy-outs and M&A, as well as advising on directors’ duties.

The appointment is a major signal of intent for Hill Dickinson and will add significant credibility to the 152-partner firm’s UK corporate practice, which has historically lagged behind larger rivals such as Eversheds and Addleshaws. A key part of Cooke’s new remit is likely to involve a period of heavy recruitment.

His departure deals a blow to DLA Piper’s private equity practice, which this month emerged as the top performer in European M&A since 2004 after advising on 704 deals worth €106.8bn (£75bn) over the three-year period.

Commenting on his move, Cooke said: “Hill Dickinson has made enormous strides in the last five years, becoming one of the fastest-growing UK law firms. I have been given the goal of creating the strongest corporate practice in the northwest.”

Hill Dickinson managing partner Peter Jackson added: “I have spoken with a number of leading entrepreneurs, successful businesses and their advisers. This appointment is a significant milestone in delivering what they are looking for.”
