Mills & Reeve has ramped up its insurance offering with the hire of a new partner in its recently opened Manchester office.

Professional indemnity specialist Elisabeth Taylor will join the firm’s insurance team on 1 September from rival firm Halliwells’ Manchester office.

She will be joined by a team including an associate, a senior lawyer and a paralegal.

Taylor, who was managing partner and head of professional indemnity at James Chapman & Co prior to the insurance specialist’s merger with Halliwells in 2006, will take the Manchester office to two full-time partners.

Mills & Reeve managing partner Guy Hichley said: “Insurance is a major strand in our strategy and a key driver to our business.

“We are delighted to have attracted an individual of Taylor’s quality and profile and look forward to expanding the team further in the near future.

“It is very exciting to see our Manchester office expanding so quickly only six months since opening.”

Taylor said: “Mills & Reeve’s insurance group boasts an impressive client base and has gone from strength to strength over the last few years.”

Mills & Reeve’s insurance team has 10 partners and more than 40 lawyers. The group was recently reappointed to Zurich’s legal panel, having worked with the company since 2000.

Taylor’s appointment follows the hire of corporate partner Julian Smith from Wragge & Co to the firm’s Birmingham office earlier in the year and the recent promotion of seven lawyers to its -partnership.

The law firm has reported a 10% increase in turnover for 2007-08 taking revenues to £62.5m. Meanwhile, profits per equity partner grew by 7% to £295,000.

Taylor is the latest in a stream of departures from Halliwells this year.

In May former London pensions head Graham Chrystie joined City practice Speechly Bircham and in February London corporate head Julian Lewis moved to Fladgate Fielder, with fellow corporate partner Martin Walsh also leaving the firm.

Barrister Sarah Venn also departed during the month to join Hill Dickinson.
