DLA Piper has won a mandate to become the exclusive legal adviser to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The firm was instructed as sole adviser to the Games Organising Committee after a competitive tender process involving around seven other law firms.

DLA Piper won a beauty parade last year to advise Glasgow on its bid for the Games but had to re-tender to advise the committee after Glasgow was selected as the host city last November.

DLA Piper will initially advise on sponsorship and broadcast rights issues but work is eventually expected to involve intellectual property, disputes and procurement.

The firm’s team is being led by Nick Fitzpatrick, co-head of the commercial sports team, and DLA Piper’s Scottish head of technology, media and commercial, John McKinlay.

McKinlay said: “We knew from the history of similar events that working on the bid does not guarantee involvement in the Games. It was made clear to us that we were being assessed on what we could deliver to Glasgow 2014. We are thrilled to have been selected and look forward to assisting the committee to deliver a showcase Games for Scotland and the Commonwealth family.”
