Two reinsurance partners - including the head of the practice - are leaving Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft to join rival law firms, writes the New York Law Journal.

Reinsurance chief Lawrence Brandes is set to join the New York office of transatlantic giant DLA Piper later this week, while another partner, Harry Cohen, will join the Manhattan branch of Crowell & Moring at the beginning of next month. Both joined Cadwalader in 2000 as part of a four-partner group from legacy firm Rosenman & Colin, where Brandes had at one time been firm chairman as well as head of the insurance and reinsurance practice.

Both the high-profile Brandes and Cohen specialise in litigation and arbitration of reinsurance disputes.

Commenting on the appointment of Brandes, DLA Piper co-chair Francis Burch said: "We've known and worked with Larry for a very long time and have tremendous respect for him. His practice will be well supported in a truly global firm."

Cohen, meanwhile, is expected to spearhead a New York reinsurance practice for Washington DC-based Crowell.

The departures come at a time when Cadwalader, stung by the downturn in its core structured finance group, has sought to bolster other practices. In a statement, litigation chair and executive committee member Gregory Markel praised the two for their contributions to the firm and wished them well.

In addition to the hire of Brandes, DLA Piper also announced yesterday (9 April) that it had recruited a new intellectual property (IP) head for its New York office. The firm brought aboard Drew Wintringham, former US IP chief at City giant Clifford Chance.

The New York Law Journal is a US sister title of Legal Week.
