CMS Cameron McKenna has hired former Dechert competition partner Chris Watson.

Watson is set to join Camerons as a partner in its telecoms, media and technology (TMT) group, having left the US firm at the end of February after just two years.

The hire will take Camerons’ TMT practice to 12 partners in the UK and Central and Eastern Europe.

While at Dechert, Watson sat in the firm’s competition group but focused his practice largely on telecoms and regulatory work. He officially withdrew from the partnership on 29 February and is understood to have been on gardening leave since then.

He has significant experience in the Middle East and his past roles include advising the World Bank on the reform of Lebanese telecommunications law and the Jordanian Telecommunications Regulatory Commission on the implementation of a new licensing agreement.

Prior to joining Dechert, Watson was a partner at Allen & Overy, which he joined as a partner in 2000 from Simmons & Simmons.

TMT head Isabel Davies said: “This is a great opportunity for our TMT practice. With the convergence of technology and telecoms, having someone of Watson’s experience and calibre joining the team will enable this thriving practice to burgeon yet further.”

Managing partner Dick Tyler added: “I am delighted that Chris has decided to join us. TMT is one of our key sector areas.”
