Clyde & Co is set to close its office in Los Angeles and open a new branch in San Francisco, it was announced today (28 April).

Aviation partner Kevin Sutherland is relocating from the City firm’s Los Angeles branch to head up the new San Francisco offering, which will be bolstered by the addition of a four-partner team from US firm Duane Morris.

Partners William Casey, Joan D’Ambrosio, Savannah Sellman and Andrew Wanger join Clydes from the Philadelphia-based firm along with six associates.

The firm indicated that the switch from Los Angeles to San Francisco was designed to strengthen its position in the West Coast insurance market.

Commenting on the opening, Clydes senior partner Michael Payton said: “The purpose of this addition is to augment our core areas of insurance and reinsurance and to complement the aviation practice for our UK, European, Asian, Middle Eastern and US clients.”

He added: “As a firm that is closely aligned with the insurance industry, we are largely free of the conflict problems that bedevil so many US firms in this arena.”

Clydes made its US debut in 2006 with the hire of a partner from Los Angeles firm Condon & Forsyth. The UK outfit also has an office in New York.
