Clifford Chance (CC) and Trowers & Hamlins have launched a new training initiative with Dubai Holding, the investment arm of the emirate’s government, to train local lawyers in UK law.

Under the scheme, which will be overseen for Dubai Holding by senior legal counsel Gerard Hobby, the City firms will admit one trainee each from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 2009.

Trainees will spend one year in London and one year in Dubai during their time with the firms, before joining Dubai Holding in-house as UK-qualified solicitors. The applicants will go through an interview process with both Dubai Holding and the respective firm.

Dubai managing partner Graham Lovett will head up the scheme for CC, with local chief Nick White performing the same role for Trowers.

White commented: “We will gain from this scheme by putting something back into the UAE community. The candidates will gain from international training. There are few, if any, solicitors from the Emirates with this qualification.”

White said Trowers – which has expanded its trainee intake for 2009 from 11 to 12 to accommodate the scheme – had been chosen due to its longstanding commitment to the region, with the firm operating branches in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Oman as well as Dubai.

CC has had a presence in the UAE for more than 30 years, having opened its Dubai arm in 1975. The City giant is set to launch in Abu Dhabi this year.
