Former Law Society president Fiona Woolf has stood down from her role as a City representative for the organisation, with Charles Russell property lawyer Paul Barnes taking over her role.

Barnes was appointed as a City representative on the Law Society’s council yesterday (17 July) at the annual general meeting (AGM) after standing in an uncontested election.

Barnes has taken over the four-year role from Woolf, who decided not to seek re-election when her role expired. Woolf will concentrate on her work as Alderman of London as well as her role as a consultant at CMS Cameron McKenna.

Barnes will join four other City representatives of the Law Society council, including:

  • PI Legal Services managing partner Fleur Palmer;
  • Clifford Chance litigation partner Simon Davis;
  • current chair of the City of London Law Society, David McIntosh; and
  • John White, senior executive at the Toronto Bank Financial Group.

At the AGM, Law Society president Andrew Holroyd officially stood down, with vice president and Surrey-based property lawyer, Paul Marsh taking over the role. Former Beachcroft Wansborough managing partner Bob Heslett stepped up to fill Marsh’s position with Linda Lee, an in-house lawyer at Action against Medical Accidents, starting her year as deputy vice president.

Marsh commented: “Charles Russell is just the sort of firm we want on the council. Paul Barnes represents a very important section of the profession.”
