Burges Salmon has announced one of its largest rounds of partner promotions in recent years, with the Bristol-based firm set to make up six of its associates from 1 May. The promotions will take the firm’s total partner numbers to 72.

The firm’s commercial and corporate practices both gain two partners, while the banking and finance practice and the commercial disputes and construction department each get one apiece.

The promotions represent an increase on last year’s tally when the firm made up five new partners, while the year before saw just four partners made up.

Senior partner Stephen McNulty commented: "In making these appointments, we are welcoming six outstanding and experienced lawyers into the partnership. These are people who already make a significant contribution to our success and have brought new skills and ideas into play.”

Last year the firm unveiled a new five-year business plan, pledging to remain the only leading UK firm to operate a single site strategy. The plan also sees the firm attempt to grow across specialist practice areas including environmental, renewables, nuclear, agriculture and rail. Last year the firm made one lateral hire, bringing on board Clive Pugh, who joined us in March from the Pensions Regulator.

McNulty added: “We also believe in our strategy of operating out of Bristol. In promoting Bristol as a place where the best can thrive, Burges Salmon has made a major contribution to the establishment of the city as a centre of excellence for professional and technical services."

The six new partners will be: Keith Beattie and John Houlden (both commercial); Ann Metherall (commercial disputes and construction); Graham Soar (banking and finance); and Mark Shepherd and Camilla Usher-Clark (both corporate).
