Herbert Smith gained three FTSE 100 clients last quarter to jump three places in Hemscott’s quarterly rankings of advisers to FTSE 100 listed clients.
The top 10 firm moved into second place behind Slaughter and May for FTSE 100 clients - also putting in a strong performance with listed clients across the board. Other firms to improve their top client tallies were Lovells - which gained one FTSE 100 client and one place, Norton Rose, Addleshaw Goddard and Burges Salmon.
Hemscott’s overall rankings of advisers to listed clients found Herbert Smith gained five listed clients in total to hold onto eighth place. The score comes on the back of a strong showing last quarter for the firm, when it was the only top firm to improve its market share.
Herbert Smith corporate head Michael Walter told Legal Week: “Focusing on FTSE 100 clients is an important part of our strategy going forward so we are glad to see it paying off. Clearly some of this is down to luck - because clients move around - but this is where we think we should be.”
Other strong performers include DLA Piper, which won six listed clients (including three FTSE 250 clients) over the quarter, to jump two spots into fifth place with 96 listed clients, Travers Smith, Lawrence Graham and Hammonds.
Norton Rose remains at the top of the overall rankings with a steady 127 listed clients, while Slaughter and May stays in top place for both the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250.
In contrast Berwin Leighton Paisner lost 17 listed clients over the period - dropping from ninth place to 13th with 52 listed clients.
