Bird & Bird has bolstered its Madrid arm with the hire of a partner from the local network office of CMS.

Miguel Rodriguez joined the firm last week from CMS Albinana & Suarez de Lezo, where he was the partner in charge of the intellectual property (IP), IT & media group.

Rodriguez will join existing IP partner Manuel Lobato, doubling the partner total in Bird & Bird’s 10-lawyer Spanish IP practice. The hire follows that of former DLA Piper European Union and competition partner Antonio Creus at the end of last month, also in Madrid.

Rodriguez’s practice focuses on a wide range of IP issues, including copyright, patents, trademarks, unfair competition, defamation, privacy law and image rights. Prior to joining Albinana, he was a partner at Gomez-Acebo & Pombo.

Bird & Bird’s Madrid managing partner, Javier Fernandez-Samaniego, said: “We feel that Miguel’s expertise in the contentious copyright and soft IP areas, combined with his excellent reputation as a litigator in the Spanish courts, will help us to further develop our IP practice.

“IP continues to be one of our strongest practices and we expect to expand further. However, this year [it will be] mainly on an associate level.”

Morag Macdonald, joint head of Bird & Bird’s international IP group, added: “Miguel’s appointment is strategically important for the firm as we look to grow our successful IP practice in Madrid.”

Meanwhile, Spanish firm Roca Junyent has hired Allen & Overy of counsel Pedro Callol as managing partner of the firm’s competition department.
