Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has bagged senior Fladgate Fielder partner Rupert Connell in a boost for the City firm’s insolvency capability.

Connell, who headed up the insolvency team at Fladgate Fielder, will join Barlows’ corporate practice next month as a partner, where he will specialise in insolvency work.

Connell joined Fladgate Fielder in 2000 with a brief to develop an insolvency and restructuring practice. Prior to that he was a partner at the legacy Hobson Audley, now part of US firm Faegre & Benson.

Barlows said the appointment was part of a push to develop the firm’s insolvency and corporate practices in response to client demand.

Commenting on his move, Connell said: “Barlows has a bigger team and the synergy between my practice and their practice is exciting. They have greater strength in numbers.”

Barlows has grown its partnership by around 6% over the last 12 months, with the top 40 UK firm making up eight new partners in its most recent round of internal promotions. The firm’s total partnership currently stands at 87.

Fladgate Fielder has previously been in expansive form of late, having made three senior hires since April, with litigation partner Paul Howcroft and corporate finance partners Julian Lewis and Grant Gordon all joining the firm.

Fladgate Fielder corporate partner Charles Wander said: “We are very sorry to see [Connell] go; he will be greatly missed. We have had, however, many people joining us.”
