Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld is set to take up residence in Allen & Overy’s (A&O’s) Spitalfields headquarters, with the US law firm moving nearly 60 staff into the building.

The firm is taking on 25,000 sq ft in the Bishops Square building owned by A&O, with the move set to take place on 18 August.

The relocation will give Akin Gump nearly twice as much space as it has in its current office in Barbican, with the firm hoping to significantly expand its UK practice.

Akin Gump currently has 57 staff in London including 33 lawyers focusing on corporate, investment funds, projects and infrastructure, and CIS and emerging markets work.

Commenting on the move, Akin Gump chairman Bruce McLean said: “This move demonstrates our commitment to a strong position in London, building on our strengths and successes.”

The firm becomes the second US practice to sub-let space from A&O, with Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker already in the building.

Investment bank Societe Generale is also two years into a 15-year lease on the building giving it 80,000 sq ft of space.

A&O moved into its new office space in November 2006, more than four years after announcing that it would be moving into the building.
