Allen & Overy (A&O) has appointed Stephen Kensell and Andrew Trahair as joint managing partners of its banking practice.

The news comes after former incumbent Chris Rushton saw his term come to an end yesterday (30 April).

Kensell and Trahair have been appointed to co-head the group for four-year terms – an extension of the three-year term the post carried under Rushton.

Rushton returns to full-time fee earning in the projects, energy and infrastructure group after serving two successive terms as chief of the key practice area.

Kensell, who was previously head of the global loans group and is dual-qualified in the UK and Australia, joined A&O in 1994 and became a partner four years later. Trahair has been a partner at the City giant since 1994.

Meanwhile, banking group chairman Mike Duncan has been confirmed in the role for another term, also extended from three years to four.

Commenting on the appointments, Duncan said: “I would personally like to thank Chris for the outstanding contribution he has made to the banking practice over the past six years. He has shown great commitment and been incredibly innovative in his approach to the role.”

He added: “Many of his initiatives will stand the global banking practice in good stead for years to come and I look forward to working with Stephen and Andrew to continue to build on the success of the practice.”
