Eversheds is to introduce online reasoning tests for potential trainees as the national giant bids to widen the net in recruiting future lawyers.
The firm has drafted in specialist training company PSL to produce the new online tests, which will cover verbal and numerical reasoning and have now been integrated into its existing application process.
Candidates will be automatically e-mailed the tests, which have been customised with Eversheds’ own branding, after completing their online application.
Trainees at the firm already undertake a non-academic course, dubbed ‘professional skills’, which covers elements including business acumen, advocacy, client care and professional standards.
Eversheds’ graduate development manager, Nathalie Brayne, said: "Not everyone gets brilliant academic results. The problem we had was that if people had not done so well academically, for whatever reason, it was hard for them to be able to demonstrate their capability at the other early stages of the recruitment process."
She added: "You only have to make a couple of recruitment mistakes and it would cost us a lot of money. The introduction of PSL’s tests allows us to hire the right people and therefore avoid costly mistakes."
The move marks the latest development in legal education as firms continue to jostle for the best candidates.
