Northwest giant Hill Dickinson has secured a merger with London shipping boutique Hill Taylor Dickinson, as consolidation in the legal insurance market continues apace.

The tie-up, which will go live on 1 November, sees the Liverpool-based firm reunited with 22-partner Hill Taylor after the two practices split in 1989 to pursue different strategies. The combined firm, which will trade as Hill Dickinson, will have 141 partners with total revenues of nearly £65m. The two firms agreed the move after 12 months of negotiations.

Hill Taylor is primarily focused on shipping, with more than half of its £11m turnover coming from shipping and commodities work, while almost half of Hill Dickinson’s turnover is generated through litigation and insurance work.

Hill Taylor managing partner Malcolm Taylor said: "We have already discussed the merger with a number of existing clients and the unanimous response has been extremely enthusiastic."

As part of the deal, one Hill Taylor partner will be voted onto Hill Dickinson’s nine-strong management board, while another will be added to its LLP board. Hill Dickinson managing partner Peter Jackson told Legal Week: "We can use this as a springboard to a much-improved base in London [that] will give us the greater credibility in the Capital we have needed."

The move is the latest example of consolidation in the legal insurance market as smaller UK insurance firms continue to struggle with the major insurers ongoing clampdown on fees.
