Clyde & Co has launched in the US after recruiting a team of lawyers from US firm Condon & Forsyth.
The four-partner team, which focuses primarily on aviation litigation, officially joined Clydes on Tuesday (27 June) after handing in their notice at Condon & Forsyth earlier this month.
Partners Diane Westwood Wilson, Christopher Carlsen and Andrew Harakas have all established a New York office for Clydes, while Kevin Sutherland has started a separate office in Los Angeles. A group of assistants is also expected to join the top 50 UK firm from Condon.
The transferring team, which will operate as Clyde & Co US, also has experience of commercial, insurance and product liability litigation.
Clydes senior partner Michael Payton told Legal Week: "The US is a big gap in our international network and the London insurance market has been very keen that we should open in New York.
"This is only the beginning. We are starting as an aviation boutique but intend to expand quickly into our other core areas — insurance and reinsurance."
The move builds on Clydes’ well-received takeover of leading UK aviation boutique Beaumont and Son last year and also makes the London insurance leader one of only a few UK firms to branch into America’s huge contentious market.
Notably, Clydes’ larger London rival Lovells is acknowledged to have built a highly successful US business focusing on insurance litigation and product liability at its New York and Chicago arms.
