Macfarlanes has sealed the prestigious lead role advising French spirits giant Pernod Ricard on its expected £7bn bid for Allied Domecq, the industry’s third-biggest company.
Pernod has approached Allied in tandem with US outfit Fortune Brands, which would be a secondary partner in a takeover. A deal would see Allied brands like Beefeater gin and Malibu rum and Pernod’s Jameson whiskey and Jacob’s Creek wines come together.
Allied is being advised by regular counsel Linklaters, which has a long history with the client. Corporate partners Dominic Welham and David Cheyne are leading the Linklaters team.
Herbert Smith corporate partner Richard Fleck is believed to have been instructed by Fortune in the firm’s first major instruction for the company.
Legal Week understands that Macfarlanes corporate partners Robert Sutton and Tim Lewis are heading the firm’s team on the proposed deal, which would be one of the firm’s largest transactions of recent years.
All the firms declined to comment.
