Kirkland & Ellis has bolstered its intellectual property (IP) capabilities with the hire of a patent litigation partner from US rival Latham & Watkins.

Steven Cherny has joined Kirkland’s IP practice group in New York after leaving Latham’s IP, media and technology team in the city.

Before joining Latham, he was a partner with New York IP leader Fish & Neave, which later merged with Boston-based firm Ropes & Gray in January 2005.

Cherny’s practice focuses on advising on high-profile patent cases in areas including electronics, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, building and consumer products, chemistry and financial and business methods.

He said he made the move to Kirkland in order to more effectively grow his practice.

“The firm gives me a solid platform to provide the highest quality service for my clients, while continuing to grow and develop my practice,” he said.

Commenting on the hire, Kirkland IP partner Greg Arovas commented: “We are very pleased that Steven is joining our team. His reputation and expertise make him a welcome addition to our active patent litigation practice.”

Earlier this month, the Chicago-based firm opened its ninth office, adding an outfit in Palo Alto. Kirkland joined six other US firms to have opened in Silicon Valley since January, including Baker Botts and King & Spalding.
