The firm’s core litigation team brought in the bulk of the fees by practice area, billing £63.7m, while corporate billed £8.6m. Finance and property respectively turned over £1.3m and £1.2m.
The figures mark an improvement on the previous year’s performance, when Barlows posted a marginal 1.3% rise in turnover.
Profit numbers for this year have yet to be disclosed. Last year Barlows saw profits per equity partner (PEP) climb 5% to just under £400,000.
The news comes after Barlows earlier this week promoted 18 lawyers to the rank of associate director. Last month the firm named professional liability head Simon Konsta (pictured) as its new senior partner, with current supremo Richard Dedman set to stand down in the autumn midway through his second five-year term.
Dedman commented: “We had a decent turnover, essentially because we saw a pick-up in dispute resolution work and we started to see more instructions in the second half of the year. We are dependant on a counter-cyclical cycle and we are confident that this year will be good.”
Yesterday (26 June) Simmons & Simmons became the latest major City firm to unveil its full financial results, notching up a 22% surge in PEP to reach a new high of £647,000. That came off the back of a 16% rise in revenues for 2007-08 from £250.4m to £290m.
