Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has promoted a record eight new partners, including seven at the firm’s City base.

Neil Beresford, Rod McLauchlan, Denis Whelan and Mark Wing are all made up in the firm’s City insurance disputes team, as is solicitor-advocate Joanne Jolly. Paul Hinton (commercial technology) and Mark Howard (pensions) also step up in London, entering the partnership on 1 May.

Corporate lawyer Padraig Walsh gets the nod at the firm’s Hong Kong office, meanwhile, bringing the total number of partners at the top 50 UK firm to 87.

Commenting on the promotions, senior partner Richard Dedman (pictured) said: “We’ve had a couple of flat financial years for litigation but we’ve now seen an increase and we are on our upward growth. This is a record number of partner appointments for us, which reflects both the talent we have and the exciting growth we are experiencing as a firm.”

He added: “All of our dispute resolution areas are busy and we’ve always done a lot of insurance and re-insurance work. We’ve put a premium on litigation lawyers; they all have wide angled skills.”

The record crop marks a slight rise from last year’s tally, when Barlows made up seven.

Yesterday Norton Rose became the latest major City firm to unveil its 2008 partnership round, making up 16 new partners – just five of whom are based in London – while Watson Farley & Williams promoted nine associates to partner.
