Weil Gotshal & Manges is set to boost its London finance practice with a partner hire from US rival O’Melveny & Myers.

The New York firm has voted to bring in Stuart Hills to its City team, although the appointment is still to be finalised.

Hills, who joined O’Melveny in 2004 from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, has a broad finance practice, with experience in representing private equity houses, corporate borrowers and lenders.

The appointment follows a long search for finance partners for Weil Gotshal in London. The firm has been looking to expand its City finance practice since the arrival of corporate partner Marco Compagnoni and his team from Lovells in 2006.

However, in a reverse for Weil Gotshal’s City arm, Hills’ hire comes as it emerges that the London office’s highest-profile finance partner — Richard Ginsburg — is planning to head back to the US.

Dual-qualified Ginsburg — who has been in the City for eight years — currently heads the London office’s private equity finance group.

It is thought that he has been asked by the firm’s management to return to New York and run the private equity finance practice there, although no date has been set for his departure.

The London office was already looking for additional finance partners in the UK before Ginsburg’s decision.

Weil Gotshal is also set to make two senior hires to its London restructuring group following the departure of Chris Mallon to Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom.

Weil Gotshal, O’Melveny and Hills all declined to comment on the appointments as it is thought that final details are still being worked through.
