Clyde & Co has made up nine new partners in this year’s round of promotions, more than doubling last year’s tally of four.

Three of the new partners are promoted in the City, the firm announced today (13 April) – energy lawyer Mike Swangard plus insurance specialists Lee Bacon and Geraldine Quirk, who will divide her time between London and the firm’s Guildford office. Mark Williamson, who is based full-time in the Guildford branch, is promoted in corporate.

Overseas, the firm has made up Shanghai corporate duo Derek Chalmers and Henry Yau, while Rob Deans and Alexis Waller boost the intellectual property and real estate practices respectively in Dubai. Aviation specialist Julio Costa, meanwhile, is promoted in Rio de Janeiro.

The promotions, which are effective from 1 May and will bring the firm’s total partnership to 152, mark a major increase on last year’s promotions round, when Clydes made up just four associates to partner.

Senior partner Michael Payton commented: “It’s always a pleasure to welcome new partners but particularly when, as this year, they are spread across so many of our offices worldwide and different practice disciplines.”

Clydes has also promoted four partners to its senior equity partnership, with Michael Grose, Matt Hannaford, Phillip Perrotta and Nick Purnell climbing the ranks. Hannaford, Perrotta and Purnell are all based in the UK, while Grose practises in Dubai.
