A&O drew up plans for the counsel role in 2006 as part of a review into alternative career paths at the magic circle firm. Its first batch of counsel were promoted in London last year, with 17 stepping up to the new rank.

Commenting on the latest promotions, managing partner David Morley (pictured) said: “The counsel role recognises the value of our senior lawyers and creates additional opportunities for people to further develop their careers.”

The news comes after A&O earlier this week (7 April) announced that it was promoting 28 associates to its global partnership. That figure represented a slight drop from the previous year’s total of 32. Eight of the 2008 batch of new partners are based in London.
