Herbert Smith has strengthened its Singapore energy team with the hire of Linklaters managing associate Richard Nelson.

Nelson, who joins Herbert Smith as partner, qualified with the magic circle firm in 1999 and has previously practised in Hong Kong and Tokyo as well as the City.

Nelson, who has also spent time on secondment at energy giant BP, will be the first specialist partner specialising in energy and infrastructure at Herbert Smith’s Singapore arm.

The hire brings the number of partners in Herbert Smith’s Singapore outpost to five. The office, launched in 1995, now has around 40 lawyers in total.

Commenting on the appointment, Herbert Smith Asia chief Ashley Alder said: “There are great opportunities in the region, as Singapore is increasingly establishing itself as a trading hub for oil, gas and other energy products in Asia, while across South East Asia there is an enormous pipeline of projects in development.”

The news comes after the top 10 City firm yesterday (8 April) announced a formal alliance with Saudi Arabian firm Al Ghazzawi Professional Association (GPA).

Herbert Smith – which currently operates an office in Dubai and is awaiting regulatory clearance to launch a new operation in Abu Dhabi – will work with GPA on areas including energy and projects.
