Herbert Smith has moved to strengthen its presence in the Middle East after securing a formal alliance with Saudi Arabian firm Al Ghazzawi Professional Association (GPA).

The exclusive agreement pairs Herbert Smith with one of the largest firms in the country, featuring around 30 lawyers and offices in Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam. The firms will work together on areas including international energy and projects, corporate work, finance and litigation.

The news comes after Herbert Smith last year opened an office in Dubai, which has since grown to six partners. The firm is currently awaiting regulatory clearance before launching in Abu Dhabi.

Herbert Smith Middle East chief Neil Brimson said: “[The alliance] is further proof of Herbert Smith's long-term commitment to the Middle East and of our success to date in building our credibility and track record in the region.

“We are fortunate to have secured an association in the crucially important Saudi market with a law firm of the standing of GPA, whose deep understanding of the kingdom's expanding business sector and marked international outlook make them a good fit with Herbert Smith.”

Herbert Smith’s most high-profile work to date in Saudi Arabia has been advising Sumitomo Chemical on its $9.8 bn (£5bn) joint venture with Saudi Aramco to develop the Rabigh refinery and petrochemical plant.

Established clients in the region include Etisalat, the United Arab Emirates national telecoms operator, which Herbert Smith has advised regularly over the last year on international acquisitions.

GPA managing partner Belal Al Ghazzawi commented: “Given the tremendous expansion of the Saudi economy and the welcome influx of foreign companies into the country, we thought it important to link up our local expertise with the international capability of a firm like Herbert Smith.”

He added: “We took some time to choose the most appropriate international firm, having worked with a large number over the years.”
