Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom has announced its 2008 partner promotions with its European offices gaining five new partners from a firm-wide total of 25.

The London office is receiving the bulk of the European promotions with three new City partners – Peter Coulton in the banking practice, Michal Berkner in the corporate team and Bruce Macauley in arbitration.

In addition, Moscow-based Alexey Kiyashko has been made partner in the corporate finance group and EU and competition specialist Ingrid Vandenborre has been promoted to partner in the Brussels office.

The promotions – which took effect from 1 April – take the firm’s total European partnership to 48.

All of the remaining promotions – bar one in Canada – are split across the firm’s US offices, with no-one in Asia promoted.

The firm-wide figure is marginally down on last year when Skadden made up 29 globally but Europe has faired better as last year it received four of the 29 new partners.

Commenting on the promotions, London office leader and European practice head Bruce Buck said: “Once again these promotions demonstrate our commitment to Europe and the emphasis we put on home-grown talent. Each one of these partners is an exceptional lawyer and we are proud to have them at the firm.”

The firm has also added to its European partner count through a number of lateral hires in recent months including Shearman & Sterling German banking partner Johannes Kremer in Frankfurt, Weil Gotshal & Manges restructuring partner Chris Mallon in London and Linklaters’ tax partner Phillipe Derouin in Paris.
