Allen & Overy (A&O) has made its second German corporate hire from US firm Shearman & Sterling this year after the capture of partner Birgit Reese.

Reese, who was made a partner at Shearman in January 2007, joins A&O in Duesseldorf as the firm continues to develop the recently-launched office.

She is accompanied from Shearman by Munich-based Alexander Veith, who joins A&O as a senior associate The starting dates for Reese and Veith have yet to be confirmed.

Commenting on the appointments, A&O German senior partner Cornelius Fischer-Zernin said: “[Reese] is young and will be the bridge between the old partners and the senior associates. It will help us to get a good pyramid structure.”

Fischer-Zernin told Legal Week he expected Reese to bring a number of clients with her, adding: “We are exploiting the current momentum on the key Duesseldorf market in order to continue to build our presence there.”

The news comes after A&O in January announced the hire of Shearman’s global co-head of corporate, Hans Rolf Koerfer. He joined the City giant’s Duesseldorf office last month after nearly eight years with New York-based Shearman.

A&O launched its Duesseldorf branch in September last year with the hire of corporate partner Thomas Austmann from magic circle rival Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. Linklaters has also launched in Duesseldorf in recent months, having opted to wind down its presence in nearby Cologne.
