Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has become the first magic circle firm to announce its partnership promotions, with the majority of this year’s 25 new partners being made up outside the UK.

The City giant has appointed a total of 10 new partners in the City – double the number made up in London last year.

A further 15 promotions came overseas, including two apiece in Madrid, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. Additional promotions were made in Brussels, Moscow, Paris, Berlin, New York, Beijing and Tokyo.

Following its pledge to promote more female partners in its corporate social responsbility report published in January, Freshfields has made up five female partners - an improvement on last year, when just two women were added to the partnership.

Commenting on the news, co-senior partner Guy Morton said: “The depth and range of outstanding qualities displayed by these new partners demonstrates once again the exceptional pool of talent within the firm.”

The total number of promotions was up by three on last year, when 22 were selected. That year also saw the firm’s overseas network dominate, with five new partners chosen in Asia and four apiece in Paris and Germany.

The corporate group received the lion’s share of promotions this year, gaining eight new partners, followed by four in the dispute resolution practice.

The promotions include two new banking partners – Tazim Hall and Alex Mitchell – that will work alongside recent hires Maurice Allen and Mike Goetz. Allen and Goetz were voted in to the Freshfields partnership last Friday (14 March) after resigning from the City arm of US firm White & Case City, with management tensions cited as a factor in their departure.
