Senior White & Case finance partners Mike Goetz and Maurice Allen (pictured) are set to quit the firm’s London office by the end of the week, it has emerged.

Global banking co-head Allen and fellow City partner Goetz are set to leave White & Case’s City arm on Friday (14 March). Associates in the firm’s London office were being informed of the impending departures this afternoon (11 March) following a meeting of the firm’s banking and capital markets group.

The pair had been linked to a number of City firms, though Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is now seen as the clear front-runner to hire the pair amid unconfirmed reports that the magic circle firm is set for a partner vote on Friday.

Allen and Goetz’s departures are directly linked to strategic tensions between the firm’s central management and a group of partners in London who are pressing for more autonomy and a stronger voice in central decision-making for the UK practice.

White & Case will now be intent on returning stability to the practice, which has been an exceptional performer in recent years and is regarded as one of the global giant’s top practices.

One finance partner at a rival practice commented: “The pair are very talented practitioners – among the top in their game. It is no secret that there is a lot of unhappiness in that office.”

Freshfields, Goetz and White & Case declined to comment. Allen could not be reached for comment.
