International in-house representative group the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) has driven up its membership in Europe to more than 1,000 for the first time.

The addition earlier this year of lawyers from Dutch chemicals group Royal DSM to the US-based body – which has 23,000 members worldwide, earlier this year – pushed the group’s European membership above the 1,000 mark.

Tony Wales, AOL international general counsel and ACC president for Europe said: “We are delighted to have Royal DSM involved with the association and it is quite fitting that a global company headquartered in Europe and with offices throughout Asia, the Americas, Africa and Australia takes ACC Europe through the 1,000-member mark.”

Wales took on the role of ACC chair last October, replacing SES global general counsel Catherine Fox as the group’s figurehead.

When Fox took on the role in November 2006 from Tyco in-house counsel Stephen Faciszewski, the group’s membership in Europe stood at 794.

Last month UK in-house lobbying group the GC100 published a set of guidelines to help senior lawyers deal with legislation covering potential conflicts of interest for company directors. The move was the latest in a spate of initiatives from UK in-house representative groups, including the Commerce & Industry Group’s fee-benchmarking survey.

The ACC is made up of lawyers from more than 10,000 companies and organisations, with existing members currently representing 74 of the largest 100 companies in the world.
