Allen & Overy has confirmed that managing partner David Morley (pictured right) will replace Guy Beringer as senior partner with Belgian managing partner Wim Dejonghe taking over from Morley as firmwide managing partner.

The firm announced the results internally last night (27 February) with voting closing earlier that day.

Morley has long been predicted as Beringer’s successor and was up against global head of corporate Richard Cranfield for the post.

Dejonghe (pictured below) fought London finance partner and former capital markets head Boyan Wells, who sits on A&O’s management board, to win the hotly-contested position.

Both will begin their new five-year management terms on 1 May.

Morley joined A&O as a trainee in 1980, becoming a partner in 1988. In 1998 he became the global head of the banking practice, being elected as managing partner in May 2003.

Dejonghe joined A&O as a partner in 2001 having previously been a partner at Loeff Claeys Verbeke. In addition to managing the Brussels and Antwerp offices he is also co-head of the global corporate department. He lost out to Morley in the firm's managing partner elections in 2002.

Beringer, who will retire at the end of April after two terms as senior partner, commented: "I congratulate David and Wim on their appointment to lead the firm as senior partner and managing partner. They will be an excellent team and I am confident that the firm will flourish under their leadership."
