Mishcon de Reya is in dispute with high-profile former client Heather Mills over alleged unpaid fees, it has emerged.

The London law firm is considering legal action against Mills, according to reports in a number of national newspapers yesterday (6 February).

The fees, which are believed to total a seven-figure sum, relate to 18 months of work provided by litigation specialist Anthony Julius in Mills’ acrimonious divorce battle with former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney.

Mishcons declined to comment on the latest reports. However, the firm ended its relationship with Mills last November mid-way through the case.

Although the firm gave no reason for the split, the news followed a string of controversial television interviews given by Mills, during which the former model was critical of media coverage of the multimillion-pound divorce.

Mills is reported to be threatening to counter-sue the firm, although it is unclear on what grounds any action would be based.

In October 2006 Mishcons’ safeguard procedures came under scrutiny after confidential information regarding the case was leaked to the press, including allegations that McCartney had mistreated Mills. All parties in the divorce proceedings denied being responsible for the leak.

The divorce battle is expected to reach a climax in the coming weeks, with Mills understood to be representing herself.

McCartney is being represented by Payne Hicks Beach family law partner Fiona Shackleton.
