Taylor Wessing has axed four staff as part of a move to reorganise its business development function in the City.

The top 30 UK law firm confirmed today that it had made four of its London business development managers redundant in the run up to Christmas, although the firm denied that the move was a cost-cutting measure.

The firm said the move was part of a reorganisation of its business development department that would lead to having “more senior people on the floor with fee earners”, effectively creating a head of business development for each of its fee earning groups.

Taylor Wessing said it would be recruiting at both senior and junior levels over the coming months, with overall numbers in the business development team set to increase by two or three in the next six months.

The news comes after City rival Olswang recently axed 10 staff from its real estate department, including five associates. Five secretarial staff opted to take voluntary redundancy, with the firm insisting the exits were part of an internal restructuring that would only affect its property department.

Last year Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer was forced to issue a hasty apology to support staff after requiring a group of backroom staff that had been made redundant to leave the building with immediate effect.
