Ashurst London finance partner Mark Vickers will take on a newly-created role managing the firm’s European banking practice when he stands down from the firm’s management board at the end of the calendar year.

The board has named Vickers in a role that will see him focus on Ashurst’s 127-lawyer European leveraged finance team which works with clients such as Royal Bank of Scotland and Lehman Brothers.

He will be responsible for overseeing issues including recruitment, training and know-how across the European offices, as well as co-ordinating client relationships across the region.

Vickers will continue to work closely with Ashurst’s overall head of international finance, Nigel Ward, whose role will not change.

He told Legal Week: “I have enjoyed participating in the strategic management of the business during the past four years, but I am very much looking forward to my new role, which is designed to accelerate the integration of the firm’s European finance practice.”

Vickers — who has been on Ashurst’s management board since 2003 — will stand down when his term ends later this year, with Milan head Daniele Raynaud leaving the committee at the same time.

The shortlist of replacement candidates for the two board positions is expected to be announced internally this week, with partners voting in the new members in January.

Paris finance partner Laurent Mabilat, energy transport and infrastructure partner Logan Mair and litigation partner Edward Sparrow keep their elected positions on the board alongside managing partner Simon Bromwich, senior partner Geoffrey Green and finance director Nigel Morland.

Ashurst’s eight-partner management board is responsible for determining strategy at the top 10 City firm and has this year been involved in a review of the firm’s lockstep.
