US duo Shearman & Sterling and O’Melveny & Myers have both announced their annual partner promotions today (12 December) – making up 13 and 23 partners respectively.
Shearman’s promotions were spread across its global offices, with two London-based lawyers – projects associate Ben Shorten and capital markets counsel Michael Benjamin – given the nod.
The firm’s New York headquarters boasted the most promotions for any individual office, with four associates made up to partner, while there were also promotions in Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Toronto and Washington DC.
O’Melveny, meanwhile, focused its promotions on its network of domestic offices, with just three associates promoted outside the US, including London-based corporate lawyer Justin Stock.
Notably, the Los Angeles-headquartered firm made up six partners in New York, continuing a trend among out-of-town firms in Manhattan looking to establish themselves in the world’s premier legal market.
O’Melveny, which also made up four in LA, promoted lawyers across a range of practice areas, including litigation, corporate finance, intellectual property, M&A and white-collar crime.
Other US firms to have announced their promotions for 2008 include Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison, which promoted just five new partners, and elite New York outfit Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, which made up eight.
