Norton Rose has secured an alliance with Saudi Arabian practice Abdulaziz Al-Assaf in a move set to boost the top 10 City law firm’s profile in the Middle East.

The deal with Riyadh-based Abdulaziz, which has 15 lawyers, hands Norton Rose a presence in a third Middle Eastern jurisdiction alongside existing bases in Dubai and Bahrain. The deal goes live on 1 January, 2008, with Norton Rose having previously acted alongside the Saudi outfit on a number of occasions.

The news comes just one month last after Norton Rose completed the hire of rated Islamic finance capital markets partner Farmida Bi from City rival Denton Wilde Sapte.

The move represents the firm’s latest acquisition in the region as it continues its bid to re-build the practice following some significant departures over the last two years. Notable exits include those of Dubai-based Islamic finance partners Nadim Khan and Zubair Mir, who joined Herbert Smith last year, and the firm’s head of its Middle East energy project finance group, John Inglis, who left for Ashurst in February.

Commenting on the new alliance, Norton Rose global banking chief Stephen Parish said: “For some time we have been planning to start an operation in Riyadh. The importance of Saudi Arabia to the Gulf is clear.”

He added: “The association with Abdulaziz Al-Assaf and our existing Bahrain and Dubai offices provide us with the ideal platform to enhance our offering especially in project finance, Islamic finance, mergers and acquisitions and equity capital markets for our clients.”

Other recent entrents to the Saudi market include Dentons, which secured a tie-up with Saudi lawyer Wael Abdulrahman as well as hiring local Fulbright & Jaworski corporate and commercial senior associate Amgad Husein as a partner.
