Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has moved to bulk up its litigation practice with the hire of two rated professional liability partners from Oxford firm Henmans.

Tony Nurse-Marsh, Henmans’ head of professional negligence, and fellow partner Clive Brett both join the City firm as partners. Nurse-Marsh focuses on defending professional services workers while Brett works on similar issues and has significant mediation experience.

The hires follow the departure of some of Barlows’ best-known litigation partners. Head of commercial litigation Claire Canning left the top 40 UK firm in September alongside commercial litigation partners Simon Willis and Matthew Lawson to join the City arm of Mayer Brown.

However, since Canning’s departure the firm has hired rated Taylor Wessing corporate partner Richard Pike and senior employment and pensions partner Adam Lambert from West End outfit Fladgate Fielder.

Barlows' head of professional liability, Sarah Clover, commented: “Tony and Clive are talented practitioners who are very adept at the high-quality complex litigation and coverage work we are noted for. Their presence will add further depth and breadth to our professional liability offering.”

Nurse-Marsh added: “I relish the opportunity of joining one of the leading firms in my specialist area.”

Around 86% of Barlows’ revenue is generated from litigation and it has around 50 litigation partners. Julian Randall took over from Canning as department head.

Henmans is a rated Oxford practice specialising in personal injury, private client and professional negligence.
