Hopes that Cuatrecasas would join Herbert Smith’s European alliance network appear dead in the water after it emerged that the Spanish independent has taken the issue off its partnership conference agenda.

Cuatrecasas had initially scheduled a vote on whether partners wanted to join the alliance, which comprises the UK firm, Germany’s Gleiss Lutz and Netherlands firm Stibbe, for its partnership meeting on 18 December, but the matter was already off the agenda by the time of a management meeting at the end of November.

Herbert Smith denies ever formally inviting the Spanish firm to join the alliance, but does concede talking with it earlier this year about working more closely together. The firms will continue to work together on a non-exclusive basis.

The news follows a review of the network by the three alliance firms. Formal mergers were not discussed as part of this review in which the firms looked at how existing relationships could be tightened.

The review concluded that the firms would improve the integration of their services and ensure that they are focusing on core practice areas and shared clients such as Tata, Blackstone and Swiss Re. Shared training and cross-firm secondments will increase while the joint steering committee for the alliance has been reduced from 15 members to nine.

Herbert Smith senior partner David Gold said: “I do not see anything changing in Spain or Italy in the short term and we are not minded to extend the alliance beyond the countries we already have.”
