Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has elected its first-ever supervisory partnership council after substantially overhauling its management structure last month in a bid to become more corporate.

The six-strong council replaces the eight-partner cross-departmental management board, leaving senior partner Richard Dedman and chief executive Clint Evans to run the firm on a day-to-day basis.

Head of professional liability Sarah Clover, together with professional liability partners Simon Konsta and Richard Harrison, commercial litigation partner Tim Strong, international insurance dispute resolution partner Tim Taylor and head of restructuring and insolvency Jon Yorke make up the new council.

The council will meet quarterly to consider proposals from Dedman and Evans and review decisions that have already been made. However, the council will soon meet for the first time to decide if this is adequate.

Evans told Legal Week: “This is a supervisory group which is not so involved in the detail. Their job is to make sure that management does its job properly — how corporate governance works.”

The firm has also amended its partnership agreement to clarify what needs to be voted on and what requires council approval. Partner hires will initially be dealt with by Dedman and Evans in conjunction with the relevant department heads.

The results of the vote were announced to the firm a fortnight ago (15 November) after an online vote. All but eight of the firm’s partners stood — leaving a pool of about 60 partners to choose from.
