Clyde & Co has boosted its fledgling New York office with the hire of contentious insurance specialist Stephen Kennedy from underwriter and reinsurance giant Odyssey America Reinsurance Corporation.

Kennedy, formerly the vice president and claims counsel at Odyssey – a subsidiary of New York Stock Exchange-listed Odyssey Re Holdings – is to join Clyde & Co as a partner in New York.

The arrival of Kennedy – who has experience in complex insurance and reinsurance litigation and arbitration – comes shortly after the capture by Clyde & Co of reinsurance litigation partner Michael Knoerzer from Dewey & LeBoeuf.

Knoerzer, who worked with Kennedy at legacy firm LeBoeuf Lamb Greene & MacRae before Kennedy moved to Odyssey, joined the top 20 UK law firm last month.

Knoerzer commented: “Having worked with Steve for over seven years in private practice, I grew to appreciate first-hand his knowledge of insurance and reinsurance and his ability as a litigator. His last few years spent with the sophisticated and experienced professionals at Odyssey Re have given Steve a unique insight into clients’ business interests and goals.”

Clyde & Co launched its US operation in July 2006 after recruiting a team of lawyers from US firm Condon & Forsyth. Partners Diane Westwood Wilson, Christopher Carlsen and Andrew Harakas launched the New York office, while Kevin Sutherland started a separate practice in Los Angeles.

The latest hire furthers Clyde & Co’s stated objective to develop a broad US insurance and reinsurance practice.
