CMS Cameron McKenna’s European alliance has appointed its first-ever director of operations at the same time as the body relocates its headquarters to Frankfurt.

The CMS network has named Matthew Gorman in the new director of operations position, in which he is expected to play a key role overseeing convergence between CMS member firms.

Gorman will oversee the central finance, IT, human resources, risk management and business development functions.

Gorman joined the CMS network and German member CMS Hasche Sigle 12 months ago, having previously worked as head of business development at City giant Clifford Chance.

Meanwhile, the CMS management team will be relocating from Brussels to Frankfurt to share office-space with Hasche Sigle from January 2008.

The team, which currently numbers around half a dozen full-time members, is expected to grow to between 10 and 15 in the coming months.

CMS executive partner Robert Derry-Evans said: “The expiry of our current lease in Brussels gives us the opportunity to assess the resourcing requirements for CMS, as we seek to accelerate the process of convergence between the practices and businesses of the nine CMS member firms, and the ideal location for the expanded central management team.

"We believe Frankfurt is that location and are delighted that the Frankfurt office of CMS Hasche Sigle has available space for us.”

As revealed by Legal Week in June, the CMS alliance is currently drawing up plans for closer integration including joint conflicts-checking and increased cost-sharing. A vote by partners in January will see the network put the finishing touches to its new strategy, including what the network will call itself going forward.
