Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton’s most senior UK partner, Andrew Curran, is to retire at the end of this calendar year.

Curran joined Cleary from Lovells as a partner in January 1997 to launch the New York firm’s English-law practice. He had spent more than 25 years with Lovells in London, where he qualified into the tax practice.

Curran specialises in corporate and M&A work and has advised on a range of public and private takeovers. Since he joined Cleary, the domestic-law practice in London has grown to 10 partners and more than 30 associates.

His retirement will leave the firm with three English-law M&A partners in London – Michael McDonald, who joined last year from Allen & Overy, Simon Jay and Tihir Sarkar.

The firm is not planning to recruit laterally to replace Curran but will instead look at expanding through internal promotions. The office plans to almost double its trainee intake over the next few years as a means of growing its English-law presence.

Commenting on the news, Curran said: “My 11 years with Cleary have been very entertaining and professionally rewarding. I have enjoyed being a member of a wonderful partnership enormously. I am especially gratified that four associates have come through the ranks to be elevated to partnership in the UK practice."

Cleary managing partner Mark Walker, who is based in New York, added: ”Andrew began the English practice in 1997 as the sole English-qualified partner, with one associate. Since then, with his help and support, we have seen remarkable development of the English practice, which was one of the first US firms in London to run a trainee programme, with 12 trainees today, increasing to 20 by 2010.”
