Bristol’s Burges Salmon is putting the finishing touches to a new five-year business plan, following a year-long review of strategy at the elite regional firm.

The report, which has been overseen by managing partner Guy Stobart and senior partner Stephen McNulty, outlines several core areas in which the firm wants to invest during the next five years.

The document also includes a new vision statement and a fresh assessment of the top 50 UK law firm’s core values.

The fresh approach is designed to coincide with Burges Salmon’s ambitious decision to move into new 200,000 sq ft flagship headquarters at Bristol’s prestigious Temple Quay Central development by 2010. Partners have already been briefed on the new plan, which will be rolled out in detail to the firm’s entire staff at its annual general meeting next week.

McNulty, who was installed as senior partner following an election earlier this year, told Legal Week: “It has always been a very important part of our approach that we involve our staff in what we do as a business.”

He added: “This will be a much more coherent statement than we have ever had before.”

The move marks a rare strategic overhaul by Burges Salmon, which is now the only top commercial firm to stick to a single-site strategy.

The new-look plan is also likely to attract the attention of market rivals based outside London, such as Osborne Clarke, Wragge & Co and Dickinson Dees. Many such firms have shifted their focus towards increased investment in London in recent years, while Burges Salmon has continued to coordinate its operations from Bristol.
