Simmons & Simmons has scored a role advising on new Government £1bn plans to reduce carbon emissions, unveiled yesterday (20 September).

Simmons is advising on the corporate, intellectual property (IP) and competition aspects of the Government’s new Energy Technologies Institute, announced by John Denham, Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities & Skills.

Simmons IP chief Richard Binns led the team for the top 20 City law firm advising the Government on a scheme that will bring together some of the world’s biggest companies in a £1bn drive to cut carbon emissions in the UK.

A new institute to be based in Loughborough will receive £550m of Government funding over the next 10 years, with investment from the private sector expected to double the budget to over £1bn.

Companies including BP, Caterpillar, EDF Energy, EON, Rolls Royce and Shell will work with the institute to come up with carbon-cutting inventions.
