Shearman & Sterling’s London office is losing two senior lawyers with the relocation of capital markets partner David Beveridge to New York and the departure of executive compensation counsel Paula Holland to US rival Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr.

US-qualified Beveridge, who is head of the firm’s capital markets America group, is widely credited with significantly boosting the profile of the firm’s US capital markets practice in Europe. He spent nearly decade in London.

In the coming months he will still spend a significant amount of time in the UK, before permanently relocating to Manhattan at the end of they year.

Other senior London-based US lawyers to have returned to New York this year include Simpson Thacher & Bartlett corporate partner Walter Looney, who managed the top tier New York firm’s London offering for 10 years before returning to the US in April.

Holland, who is joining WilmerHale as a partner from Shearman, helped establish Shearman’s London-based executive compensation and employee benefits practice.

The move to WilmerHale comes after its London office lost four partners and a team of associates from its London office to US rival Heller Ehrman over the summer. London corporate partner Joe Pillman has pledged to rebuild its London corporate team with further lateral hires in the pipeline.

Hardy commented: “Defining success only by whether you become a partner is not enough to attract and retain talented people.”
