Osborne Clarke (OC) has become the latest national firm to unveil record salary rises for its lawyers, with the Bristol heavyweight posting a 24% pay hike for newly-qualified lawyers (NQs) in the capital.

NQs at the firm’s City arm, which now accounts for more than a third of total revenues, will take home £63,000, up from £51,000 during 2005-06.

In Reading, NQs will pocket £50,000, up 16% from £43,000 last year, with those based in Bristol receiving a market-leading £41,000, a 14% rise on the £36,000 rate paid out during the same period last year.

The increases, which take effect this month, will also see trainees at OC’s office in London and Reading both earn £34,000 and £35,000 for years one and two respectively, with their counterparts in Bristol taking home £30,000 and £31,000.

OC managing partner Simon Beswick said: “We believe our current pay levels and bonus schemes, coupled with a strong, supportive culture, make OC an excellent choice for lawyers and trainees looking to progress their careers.”

The move comes after it was revealed this week on legalweek.com (16 July) that Halliwells’ London NQs will now take home £62,000 — representing a 22% increase on the £51,000 paid out to its NQs based in the capital last term.

Under the new salary bandings, which took effect from 1 July, junior Halliwells lawyers in Manchester and Liverpool will now pocket £39,000, a rise of 11% from £35,000 last year.
