Legal Week has set out this year to raise the profile of commercial lawyers to the wider business community with the launch of the British Legal Awards.

The awards will combine the transparency and authority of the Legal Week Awards with an independent and rigorous judging process that will bring together senior business figures from the City and beyond.

The 24 categories are divided into individual, team and firm awards. This year the Finance Team of the Year award has been divided into two categories β€” Banking and Securities β€” to reflect the breadth of disciplines within this practice area. There are also new awards for private client and employment, pensions, benefits and tax teams.

For a second year, The City of London Law Society has agreed to support The City of London Lifetime Achievement Award, which was won last year by Janet Gaymer, the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

Legal Week editor-in-chief John Malpas said: β€œThe relaunch of the Legal Week Awards as the British Legal Awards marks a conscious bid to invite the wider business community to celebrate the contribution commercial lawyers make to the UK economy.”

The ceremony will be held on 28 November in central London. The closing date for entries is 5 September.
