Allen & Overy (A&O) has launched in Abu Dhabi after poaching two local partners from Simmons & Simmons as the firm continues to expand its Middle East presence.

Project finance and corporate partner Ibrahim Mubaydeen and corporate partner Francois Duquette will head up the office, which is expected to be open for business in September. They will be joined by A&O projects partner Jas Gillar, who will relocate from the firm’s Singapore office.

The announcement follows approval for the opening by the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. A&O will join a number of other firms in Abu Dhabi, including Simmons & Simmons, Clyde & Co, Denton Wilde Sapte, Trowers & Hamlins and Shearman & Sterling.

A&O Dubai managing partner Simon Roderick said: “We have very strong client relationships in Abu Dhabi and are excited by the opportunities presented by its burgeoning market. Opening an office with such a strong team immediately positions ourselves as a leading player in Abu Dhabi and shows our commitment to the UAE’s largest Emirate.”

The move comes only a month after A&O announced it is to launch an office in Saudi Arabia, after agreeing a tie-up with local Riyadh practice Abdulaziz Al Gasim Law Firm.

That launch is being spearheaded by A&O partner Julian Johansen, who joined the magic circle firm in January from Dubai Investment Group, where he was general counsel.
