Partners at Lovells are to receive management training in the latest measure introduced by the top 10 City firm to help it implement its new strategy.

The initiative, which could see the partners attend courses at a business school, is being led by London managing partner Ruth Grant.

Training is likely to cover practical management issues such as dealing with clients and people rather than the more theoretical training on the MBA-style course available to junior lawyers. Lovells signed an agreement with City University’s Cass Business School in September last year to offer its junior lawyers MBA-style training.

Grant told Legal Week: “We are looking at personal development for our partners as well as our senior associates and counsel. It may mean things like leadership, client and people management training for the senior partnership — possibly through teaming up with a business school.”

The move comes as part of a wider effort by the firm to boost its partner performance and profitability. The firm has introduced a number of changes following an extensive strategy review announced last summer by managing partner David Harris.

As part of the review, the firm is in the process of ranking how profitable its major clients are. Current major clients of the firm include Barclays, ITV, SABMiller, Merck and Lloyds TSB. The review is aimed at repositioning Lovells at the top end of the City after several years of senior departures and comparatively poor financial results.
